Biographies for Nominees for the Board of Directors
Carole has served on the WHS Board of Directors for four years, and has been actively involved with SNIPS, Team Educate, various other committees and outreach events, the Fur Ball, the former Diamond Dogs program, and most recently, researched and compiled a history of the Watauga Humane Society from 1969 to 2019 in celebration of the 50th year anniversary.
Monique Eckerd considers her life’s work to be a steward for all animals. This belief guided her to an Animal Science degree from NC State and later a Masters in Biology. Starting at 15, her career path includes working with the Connemara goatherd, at vet’s offices, on dairy farms, training police and protection K-9’s, and in research labs. Currently employed at App State as a Research Operations Manager, Monique is pursuing her Environmental Education certificate. Monique presently serves the Watauga Humane Society as Chair of SNIPS, Team Education, and Board co-treasurer.
Joyce Ogburn's 35-year career in higher education was as a librarian, educator, and administrator, working at such institutions as Penn State, Yale, the University of Washington, and the University of Utah. She served on numerous national boards and was elected president of the Association of College and Research Libraries, serving from 2011-2012. She recently retired from Appalachian State University where she was first hired as Dean of Libraries in 2013. She plans to continue her service on educational boards (the UNC-CH School of Information and Library Sciences Board of Visitors, for example) and as a financial coach.
