What’s Going On in Ashe County?
Since June 2025, four raccoons have tested positive for rabies in Ashe County, found in Laurel Springs, Jefferson, West Jefferson, and Creston. In response, officials issued a county-wide rabies alert to increase awareness and promote prevention.

Why Rabies Demands Attention
Rabies is a viral disease that attacks the brain and nervous system. Once symptoms appear, it’s nearly always fatal. The bright side? It’s completely avoidable with timely vaccination.

In North Carolina, wild animals like raccoons, skunks, bats, and foxes are the most frequent carriers. That’s why prevention, not panic, is key.

Take Action: Monday, August 25
