While getting Jessie ready for adoption, we discovered that Jessie has both FIV (feline immunodeficiency virus) and FeLV (feline leukemia). Both of these conditions impact the immune system, and result in a lessened ability to fight off infection. Unfortunately, the average lifespan of cats afflicted by FeLV is drastically decreased, at roughly 2-3 years following infection. That being said, they typically lead happy, normal lives for the majority of this time period. FeLV is transmissible to other cats, so Jessie will need to be the only cat in his forever family.
