Kids, Cats, and Chapter Books: “Reading for Paws” Returns This Summer

BOONE, NC – Watauga Humane Society is bringing back one of its most beloved summer programs, and it’s the cat’s pajamas. Reading for Paws is back on the calendar, offering young book lovers the chance to read aloud to shelter cats every Thursday from June 12 to August 7.

The program, open to rising 2nd–6th graders, pairs kids with adoptable cats and kittens for cozy, 30-minute reading sessions in the shelter’s cat room. It’s a win-win: children sharpen their reading skills and boost confidence while giving cats the companionship and comfort they crave.

“Watching kids bond with the cats over a good story is something special,” said shelter staff. “It’s not just about reading — it’s about connection.”

Sessions run at 11:30 AM and 12:00 PM each Thursday, with a grand finale pizza party set for August 7 to celebrate a summer of stories and new friendships.

Spots are limited, and the cats are ready for their next chapter. Parents can sign up their young readers (with an accompanying adult) by clicking here

Because nothing beats a good book—except maybe sharing it with a whiskered friend.
